MCat Organic Chemistry Practice Questions - Solving These Types of Questions Makes the Test Easy!
MCat Organic Chemistry Practice Questions - Solving These Types of Questions Makes the Test Easy!I have a lot of Organic Chemistry practice questions and I wish I could offer any answers to help you through them. This is because the questions seem to be worded so vaguely that I can't really tell which one is the correct one to answer. The problem with MCat Organic Chemistry practice is that you may get some of the different MCat organic chemistry questions from the web but they may not be 'pure'. There are a few different types of MCat Organic Chemistry question such as how many components of a molecule are there and if it has an oxygen atom.Since this is all very general in nature, it makes it hard to answer the questions on the test. That is why I feel you must do a little more research about what type of question you need to be answering and which ones you need to pass and which ones you need to skip. Also you need to think about the kind of material that is going to be tested and how to make the test easy for you to understand. One of the first questions you will need to consider is the structure of an organic molecule and how does one come up with an answer to that question? That is why I think the organic chemistry test is easier than the book reading portion because it is not trying to give you a topic of debate or answer. In a sense they are really trying to expose you to what science is all about and the structure of a molecule is just a small example of what is out there. There are plenty of topics to cover in these problems so don't worry about how to answer the structure of a molecule because I know you can find plenty of free online sources that have the information. The next type of organic chemistry question that you need to consider is whether or not it is a ring or not. Mostof the questions in this area are either a single chain or a double chain and they are not much of a challenge to answer. Some of the problems are harder such as how many differe nt types of bonds are there, and if there are two or more different types of carbons. The last type of question is more difficult because it involves whether the atom bond is to the right or to the left of the atom. Now if you get stuck at any point while looking for answers to these types of questions, I would recommend looking at a practice exam or look at the Internet to see if there is a solution that will show you how to solve this problem. This is not to say that there are no problems that you need to do well and you must solve them, but with all these simple problems you can always practice and find answers to them.

Book Musicals
Book Musicals Have You Ever Seen a Book Musical? ChaptersMusicals that Started as NovelsWhat Is a Book Musical, Exactly? The Most Popular Book MusicalsWeâre not talking a Disney Fantasia-esque tale wherein books, as the brooms in that film, take on a life of their own, flapping about the stage, unbidden.Like the aforementioned brooms, such a phenomenon would be rather frightening, donât you think?A book musical is a type of musical theatre with specific criteria â" how many songs and how they are woven into the story; when the musical elements are introduced, and so on.Donât fret, weâll go into more detail in the meat of the topic; this is just the introduction! Many people assume that a book musical is a stage show that includes music, whose inspiration or, indeed, the whole story is lifted from a previously published book.In some cases, that is exactly how a musical comes to be: somebody reads a great book, visualises soaring vocals and lively dance steps and, next thing you know, Broadwayâs next big show is going on tou r!Or West Endâs next big show⦠UK composers have turned out more than a few internationally renown musicals, too.Although such a scenario involves books and musicals, the shows that come about that way are not all book musicals. In fact, letâs start the discussion off by going over a few books that became musicals. Later, weâll divulge the criteria that make for a book musical.Time to get your literary thinking caps on! Printed stories came much later.Daniel Defoe gave us Moll Flanders and Robinson Crusoe in the early 18th Century.By the time those works were published, opera had been a form of entertainment in Italy for more than 100 years and was working its way across Europe. The French writer Molière was instrumental in the evolution of musical theatre. He envisioned his more farcical tales as stage shows and, teaming up with musician Jean-Baptiste Lully, produced a string of musical comedies. Those shows had a great influence on the short season of English opera and they illustrate our point: back then and today, the inspiration for a hit musical could come from anywhere. For instance, the Tony Awar d-winning Rent draws directly on Pucciniâs La Bohème for inspiration; it even parallels some of the older operaâs storylines.Itâs natural for playwrights to draw on past literary work, perhaps updating the story to reflect modern times.Among popular musicals that started as books are:My Fair Lady, from George Bernard Shawâs PygmalionThe King and I, from Margaret Landonâs Anna and the King of SiamThe Sound of Music from The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta von TrappLes Misérables by Victor HugoMary Poppins by P.L.TraversEvita, from the book Evita: The Woman with the Whip by Mary MainCharlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald DahlThe Phantom of the Opera by Gaston LerouxAndrew Lloyd Webber, a prolific composer of musical scores for stage and screen often draws inspiration from literature. Besides The Phantom, he has brought Cats to life (based on a book by T.S. Elliot) and Jesus Christ Superstar, based on the Gospels. All of these stories were firmly estab lished as books before they were made into shows; other types of books can also serve as inspiration for a Broadway musical. Think Hamilton, inspired by a biography of that American president. In summary: many books have been turned into musicals, but not every musical is a book musical⦠which begs the question: how many different types of musicals are there? What Is a Book Musical, Exactly? So far, weâve established that books become musicals and weâre still intrigued by the idea that musicals have books.By that, we donât mean that of musicals are written and, from those productions, a book is compiled even though that is sometimes the case.As an example: Mamma Mia, How Can I Resist You?, by Judy Cramer, tells the story of how ABBAâs songs came to be one of the most successful musicals to ever hit the stage.A book musical is different than that, even.Book musicals have three distinct components and certain characteristics to define them.Weâll start by exploring them and we challenge you to mentally review the musicals youâve seen to determine if they are book musicals or a different type of musical. For a theatre company, working from a book provides several advantages Image by WikimediaImages from PixabayCharacteristicsMost musicals start out with the same three components: music, lyrics and a script. However, a book musical follows an orderly progression from beginning to end⦠unlike concept musicals, which presents its story in fragments relevant to the theme or moral of the story. The script details the performersâ lines and stage directions; it may also include song lyrics. Scripts may contain notes about character development and perhaps a bit of backstory so that the performers can get some ideas about how best to play their role.As opposed to other types of musicals, the songs in a book musical are integral to the story. They may be sung to heighten the dramatic intensity of the situation, to a romantic partner as a way to convey deep emotion or as a duet â" One Hand, One Heart in West Side Story comes to mind as a great example of such.Song lyrics help to advance the story rather than give a break from it.Such songs contrast with those from musicals like Cher Show, an American musical that details the life and songs of that remarkable performer. Needless to say, the score for that show incorporates her many hit songs rather than new songs written specifically for the show. Now, letâs look closer at each of the facets all book musicals have in common. The LibrettoIn Italian, âlibrettoâ means âlittle bookâ.Usually, when the script includes the showâs song lyrics, it is referred to as a libretto. Many theatrical branches use librettos: operas and operettas; cantatas and oratorio. Librettos even feature in religious practices such as requiems.Productions tend to run more smoothly from a libretto because they include stage directions. And, because the songs are integral to the story â" indeed, they form a part of the story, it helps the performers get a sense of continuity when lyrics are included within the dialogue. In a book musical, mos t (if not all) the characters are all introduced and the plot is laid out in the first act.The first act usually runs longer than the second and, generally, the complication or conflict â" the crux of the story, will be revealed just before intermission. Also, learn to distinguish the characteristics of musical revuesâ¦The MusicMusic and lyrics together are called the score.A score may include music played softly during charactersâ conversational interludes as well as background music for action scenes, if any. It may even include orchestrations to be played during the intermission. It is quite common for one person to write the music and another the lyrics; Gilbert and Sullivan were just such a writing team. The former wrote the libretti while the latter composed the music.Across the pond, Rodgers and Hammerstein were an equally prolific creative team; Richard Rodgers composed the music and Oscar Hammerstein wrote lines and lyrics. While collaborations are common in musical theate r, some composers write their showsâ music and lyrics alone. An excellent, modern-day example of such is Lin-Manuel Miranda, author/composer of Hamilton. In a book musical, most of the songs are sung in the first act and reprised in the second, sometimes with different lyrics. These second-act tunes may be sung at a different tempo, by a chorus rather than the character who sang it first; they may even have different lyrics while the music remains the same. Occasionally, a new song and dance may be added.Do you know of a rock musical that had music written especially for the show? The LyricsGive âem the ole razzle-dazzle⦠Billy Flynn, ChicagoIn some musicals, songs are meant as an aside to the audience, giving us a peek into the charactersâ thoughts or motivations. By contrast, song lyrics in book musicals have a direct import on the story itself.Edelweiss, poignantly sung by the von Trapp family just before leaving Austria forever is the perfect case in point.Their audience in cludes Nazi officials, the very regime Captain von Trapp reviles, which he effectively demonstrates when he joins his son in singing about the pure, white flower that will forever symbolise his beloved Austria. So effective was this ballad that many fans of The Sound of Music believed it was Austriaâs national anthem â" or, at least a traditional folk song when, in fact, it was written by American lyricist Oscar Hammerstein, who had no ties to Austria.Find out how film musicals brought this type of entertainment to the masses⦠Many Broadway productions are based on classic tales published centuries ago Image by Dariusz Sankowski from PixabayThe Most Popular Book MusicalsDoes all of this leave you scratching your head, wondering which Broadway musicals â" or any show put on in any theatre in New York or London are actually book musicals? You might argue that every musical is a book musical; donât they all have to have a script? To an extent, you are correct but, today, a new musical tends to eschew books altogether; sometimes, actorsâ lines are sung or rapped rather than recited. In that sense, musical theatre is edging ever closer to opera. That is why classic titles are generally considered true book musicals. Among the best musical fare to play on Broadway are:Guys and Dolls: book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows; score by Frank LoesserOklahoma!: book by Oscar Hammerstein; score by Richard RodgersFiddler on the Roof: book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, music by Jerry BockWest Side Story: boo k by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen SondheimShowboat: book by Oscar Hammerstein, music by Jerome KernAnother point to keep in mind: many Broadway shows can be classified in several different ways. For instance, a jukebox musical such as Mamma Mia may also be considered a musical comedy. The musical Beauty and the Beast, adapted from the Disney movie, could be considered a book musical although its genesis was the musical film. The question is: do you need to know whether the Broadway production you want to buy tickets for is a book musical or a concept musical?Probably not, but understanding how such productions are classified helps you to understand musical theatre as a whole: past, present and future.Go ahead and enjoy all of the revivals and new performances you want!

Should I Go To Purdue University
Should I Go To Purdue University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Angela specializes inSpanish tutoringand ESL tutoringin Los Angeles. She graduated from Purdue University in 2014 with a Bachelors degree in Foreign Language Education. Read on for her thoughts on Purdue University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Angela:Purdue University is in the town of West Lafayette, Indiana, which is a medium-sized, friendly, welcoming, and smart town. I was able to walk everywhere I needed to go. Everything on campus is very accessible and easy to get to. The only time I needed a car was when I would go home over breaks. The bus system on campus is amazing; there are buses that go everywhere you would need to go. And the best part? The buses are always free to students, whether you are on campus or going into West Lafayette/Lafayette. The town also has a lot of bike paths, so if you want to go biking, you do not have to bike on the main roads. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Angela:I found that the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants were very accessible. About halfway through my freshman year, I started working with one of my Spanish professors on a community outreach tutoring program and research program. I was able to stay with that program for all four years of college. I was surprised that my professors would let freshman help them with their research, but at Purdue University, the professors want their students to get as many research, internship, teaching, and learning opportunities as possible. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Angela:The majority of the students at Purdue University live in residence halls during their first two years on campus. That is what I did, and I loved it. The residence halls were a great place to meet new friends, form study groups, and meet people who were all going through the same general experiences. As a freshman, you will live on a floor with other freshmentherefore, you can all be excited, nervous, and hopeful about this new college experience together. There are four main dining courts for all the residence halls, and they are all-you-care-to-eat buffet style. I can honestly say the food in the dining courts was one of the things I missed the most when I moved out of the residence halls. Purdue University also has over 1,000 clubs and organizations, so there is something for everyone. The hardest part is working up the courage to go to the meetings. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Angela:Purdue University is mostly known for its Engineering major, and most people do not even realize that Purdue University has many other programs that are just as nationally recognized. I chose to study Education while at Purdue University. I chose to major in Education because Purdue University has a very well regarded program, and it lets students get real classroom and teaching experience from their first semester of freshman year on. My particular area of study, Spanish Education, was small, with less than 15 students in my major. This allowed us to get more experience and more contact with our professors. I was able to establish really great relationships with a lot of my professors because my class sizes were so small, and I know these professors will be my colleagues and mentors for a very long time. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Angela:This was one of my biggest concerns before going to college, and I think it is a big concern for many incoming freshmen. I came from a fairly small town and high school, and I had been friends with the same people since kindergarten. I was happily surprised, however, to realize how welcoming and inviting everyone at Purdue University was. I also highly recommend getting involved in an activity or two. I chose the choirs at Purdue University. After getting involved with the choirs, I quickly became involved in other organizations, and I made fast but life-long friends. Greek life does not play a very significant role on campusonly about 18%, or almost one fifth, of the university is involved in Greek life. There are definitely social opportunities for everyone on campus. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Angela:The university has a great Career Center that hosts many career fairs. These career fairs are for everyone, not just seniors who are looking for full-time jobs. I know many people who have gotten summer internships from these career fairs, even for the summer after freshman year. The Career Center is also available to all Purdue University alumni anytime they need it. Because Purdue University has so many renowned programs, many companies and employers come to campus solely to recruit Purdue University students. They know that the university produces high-caliber graduates who will do very well in the workforce. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Angela:Purdue University has multiple libraries on campus, and each library is subject-specific. This way, each college has its own reference center. The libraries all have common study areas, individual study areas, and quiet study areas, so there is a space for everyone. Purdue University also has a student union, which was my favorite place to do homework in. The union is not as quiet, but it has lots of study tables for students to meet with each other and study, or to do group projects. All throughout campus, different buildings have study rooms too, and there are computer labs in nearly every building on campus. There is definitely enough room for everyone to find their own little study niche. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Angela:The towns of West Lafayette and Lafayette are very welcoming toward Purdue University students. There are a lot of things to do throughout the towns. For example, Lafayette has a really cool downtown with lots of shops and restaurants. West Lafayette is also only an hour drive from Indianapolis, which is the capital of Indiana. A lot of students choose to go to Indianapolis for the day to go see a show, go shopping, explore the downtown area, or go to one of the many city festivals. Another fun thing to do is to take the train to Chicago, which leaves every morning. Although West Lafayette is a small-to-medium sized town, there is still a lot to do and lots of easy ways to get to bigger cities. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Angela:There are about 40,000 people overall at the university, with about 30,000 undergraduate students. This was a bit daunting for me, because I graduated from high school with about 115 students in my class. However, I was surprised at how small the university felt. I was able to walk from one end of the campus to the other in 10 minutes, although my classes were usually held in the Education buildings, which were right next to each other. I only ever had one large lecture throughout my time at Purdue University, and my average class sizes were around 20 people. However, my smallest class was four people. I love that I was able to get small class sizes, but still be at a bigger university with all the opportunities that it offered. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Angela: My most memorable experience with a professor occurred during my freshman year at Purdue University. During the second month of classes, a professor came to talk to my Spanish 201 class. She was discussing a tutoring and research opportunity that she was offering to all students. She was looking for students to help her with her community outreach tutoring program, while also helping her research other topics. I jumped at the chance to do this, because I was profoundly interested in how people learn a second language. I continued with this program for all four years of school, and I know it is something that has helped me immenselywith school, with research, and with helping me decide on a career. Nazi Germany
Nazi Germany What Was Life Like in Nazi Germany? ChaptersSeeding the Third ReichLife in Nazi GermanyWomen in Nazi GermanyGrowing Up in Hitlerâs GermanyBy all accounts, the Weimar Republic, as Germany was known from 1918 until the Nazi regime came into power, was not a country of peaceable living where great fortunes could be amassed.Upon the cessation of fighting World War I in November 1918, the German people rose up to overthrow the monarchy in favour of a parliamentary republic.Once it was established, life did not get easier for German (or Weimar) citizens: a lack of work, food, and goods, coupled with hyperinflation, led to grave social unrest.Add to that the fact that the country had no real political direction or leadership.Furthermore, distaste for the terms of the Treaty of Versailles fueled resentment for the military capitulation in 1918 and led to strong right-wing sentiment: the perfect stage setting for a fervent, ambitious, relatively unknown political entity â" Adolf Hitler.Yes, the stage was set, but it needed l ighting. The Great Depression provided megawatts of illumination: on the desperate plight of the poor, the cold and the hungry, on the seeming prosperity of foreigners at the expense of true Germans, and on the general lack of political direction and industry throughout the nation. We now pull back the curtain to reveal the rise of the Third Reich, how it went from serving the people to serving an ideology; its horrors and its downfall.Beer Hall Putsch, it saw around 2,000 Nazis confront a police cordon surrounding city hall. The ensuing battle left 16 Nazis dead and Hitler, himself, wounded. He fled to the countryside to avoid capture but was caught two days later and charged with treason. That is why, for all of his fiery speeches and impassioned rhetoric, President von Hindenburg only reluctantly appointed him as chancellor of Germany â" he felt someone should keep an eye on Hitler lest the upstart attempt another treasonous move. That caution was in vain seeing as, shortly afterward , the Cabinet signed into law the Enabling Act, giving Herr Hitler the power to enact laws without the involvement of the Reichstag â" the governing body.Between that amendment to the Weimar constitution and the Reichstag Fire Decree, which transferred state powers to the Reich government â" read: Herr Hitler, he gained complete and autonomous control of the country.By 1933, Germany had become a dictatorship.Discover also how the Russian Revolution put the Soviet Union in the hands of another autocratic leader...Life in Nazi GermanyIn spite of vague unease, the people were at first relatively content: after years of uncertainty, hardship, and strife, they finally had a measure of economic security: nearly every man had a job and there was sufficient, if not abundant food.Granted, citizens had to trade some civil liberties for that level of security but that seemed a small price to pay for the prospect of daily bread.Farmers especially benefited from Nazi policies. This demographic were ardent in their support of Nazi ideology and their loyalty was rewarded with a substantial increase in earnings and privilege. Those who contributed to the rearmament efforts through any of three worker programmes could be rewarded with special privileges such as theatre tickets, low-cost holidays and further education. However, workers in non-armament industries did not fare so well: their wages shrunk and work hours increased. There were proportionately more industrial accidents in this sector and, should anyone complain about working conditions, they could be fired and blacklisted â" stricken from employment eligibility registers.Womenâs employment came under special focus in Nazi propaganda, not because of their admirable performance on the production line but because Nazi leaders thought their efforts at supporting the Reich lay elsewhere...Diligent mothers with lots of children could be awarded the Mother's Cross Source: WikipediaWomen in Nazi GermanyWomen in Nazi German y were expected to make their lives revolve around the 3Ks â" kinder-küche-kirche, meaning children, kitchen and church. From the start of the regime, female workers were persuaded to give up their jobs (to men), stay home and bear as many Aryan children as possible.Race was an important criterion of the German Reich; indeed, women could even receive incentives to bear Aryan children of Schutzstaffel members â" the infamous SS guards. The more, the better! Women with large broods could qualify for special distinction, such as the Motherâs Cross.Women were not to glamourise themselves at all: no makeup or elaborate hairstyles and certainly no stylish clothing. In contrast to the attractiveness of Hitlerâs Eva Braun, the proclaimed ideal German woman should not keep slim: it was thought that slender women had more complications during birth â" something to be avoided at all costs.Likewise, no intellectual prowess was expected of any female other than to contribute to the educati on of her children â" and, at that, only their social education, along party lines. However, when more hands were needed â" in the workforce and in the military, women were once again welcomed on the factory floor and in hospital wards (as nurses, not doctors). All children were expected to attend school as soon as they were eligible, for their academic education as well grounding in ideological principles. That education was reinforced when they joined the Hitler Youth groups. How does Nazi Germany compare to American colonists' struggle for independence?Hitler Youth male uniform shirt with insignia and swastika armband Source: Wikipedia Credit: WerwilGrowing Up in Hitlerâs GermanyChildren of true German blood were national treasures and generally treated well: lots of nutritious food and organised activities; indoctrination into fascist beliefs started young for the future of the Reich.By comparison, children of other ethnicities suffered: poor living conditions, meager rations, a nd segregation, even in the early days of Nazism.Racial purity took on a sinister double meaning.Disabled children, whether Aryan or other ethnicity were the first targets of Hitlerâs eugenics programme â" after all, how can one boast a master race when some were defective? Not too long after, he included disabled adults in that decree, calling their extermination programme Aktion T4.But, as long as you were fit and Aryan, you had little to worry about, provided you ascribed to national socialism.Adolescents were given little choice in their conscription into Hitler Youth groups; it was a join or your family suffers proposition.By 1936, membership was compulsory and, three years later, fully 90% of all children aged 10 and older were wearing the uniform. The tasks and activities varied between boys, who were trained to become a soldier and girls, who were taught only to be homemakers.Even their school curriculum was changed to reflect the priorities of the Reich:Biology courses ref lected the inferiority of other races in support of eugenicsHistory included an in-depth study of the Führer's rise to powerMaths and chemistry were downgraded in importancephysical fitness sessions became a daily eventall teachers had to be Nazi party membersIn short, everywhere kids turned, they were being force-fed National Socialist idealism. With the entire German population trembling under authoritarian rule, it became time to purge the country of racial diversity and religions unsympathetic to the Nazi cause. In one notable squabble with religious leaders, Hitlerâs desire to ban the Old Testament because of its Jewish roots culminated in more than 800 Pastors of non-conforming churches to be sent to concentration camps.Kristallnacht and those death camps are the most-recognised symbols of World War II.We must never forget how, long before the Night of Broken Glass and the attempted genocide of a people, one personâs efforts at destruction â" of an entire race, of progress ive ideals, of free thought and civil liberty started long before those atrocities exploded onto public consciousness. Not stealthily or through subterfuge but in full view of both lawmakers and citizens: that may well be the most disturbing aspect of Nazi Germany. Now learn about more global events that changed the economic and political climate...

How to use emotional intelligence to maximize your introverted nature - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How to use emotional intelligence to maximize your introverted nature - Introvert Whisperer How to use emotional intelligence to maximize your introverted nature By now, as someone who identifies as an introvert, you will most likely have identified some of the strengths you share and challenges you face alongside other introverts. Introverts have a special talent to slow down the pace of thought and think through propositions calmly and rationally before reacting, to listen to the ideas of others and take them somewhere new, and to enjoy the intimacy of developing projects by yourself or in a one-to-one situation. However, it is not unlikely that you are sick of being misunderstood or labeled as âanti-socialâ, of being pressured into group meetings, or expected to ping ideas back and forth before youâve had a chance to think them through. Well, just because you have the thoughtful metabolism of an introvert, it doesnât mean your emotional intelligence (EQ) couldnât be a little more finely tuned to help you make the most of your unique skills and to navigate troubled waters. EQ refers to the ability to detect your own emotions and those of others, to process and manage them, and ultimately to utilize them for the better. Applying EQ techniques to situations you find yourself in as an introvert can help you to emerge from them fulfilled and productive, and to counteract and resolve the misapprehension of others towards your way of doing things. For example, when youâre in a meeting and you get that sinking feeling of seeing a colleagueâs disappointment that you donât yet have anything to add to the conversation, look at your emotions. Are they helping you? No. So you know you need to take steps to make future situations run more smoothly. And look at your colleagueâs emotions. What do they see when they look at you? What else is going on in their work day to make them frustrated? Identifying the misunderstanding between the pair of you can empower you to speak to them alone later, resolve the issue, and set a firmer groundwork for how you can operate together in future. Elementary School Grade by Grade Homework Help Guide
Elementary School Grade by Grade Homework Help Guide Grade by Grade Parent Guide for Elementary Homework Homework is an essential part of learning, helping reinforce what is taught in the classroom. However, many parents are unsure exactly what their role in homework should be and how much homework to expect in each grade. While there is no widespread rule that applies to students and parents everywhere, here is a general guide as your child moves through elementary and middle school. Kindergarten Homework in kindergarten is minimal and focused primarily on teaching students to follow directions, work independently and develop reading building blocks (such as letter sounds and combinations and sight words) and basic math skills. Your role: Let your child take the lead on any homework assignments, but be on hand for help. Read with your child every night. First Grade Practice worksheets reinforce concepts taught in the classroom and may come home nightly or weekly so your child can complete at a comfortable pace. The National Parent Teacher Association recommends no more than 20 minutes of homework per night in first grade, but most elementary teachers encourage nightly reading of 15-30 minutes in addition to other homework. Your role: Have your child attempt homework independently, but be available for questions and help. Continue to read to your child and have your child read to you, practicing reading strategies taught in class. Second Grade By second grade, the goal is for your child to become a proficient reader. The teacher may provide a specific reading book for your child to read to you each night. Spelling will remain a focus, and you should continue to read together as well. Math worksheets will come home and may take 10-20 minutes to complete, focusing on explaining math concepts. Your role: Continue to help your child build independence as a reader and a student overall. Third Grade By third grade, your third-grader should be capable of maintaining the homework routine without reminders from you. Nightly math homework should take 15-25 minutes and moves into multiplication, division and early geometry (in addition to multi-digit addition and subtraction). Other homework, such as science or social studies projects, may take additional time. Your child should read for at least 20 minutes each night, both independently to him or herself and aloud. You may notice that reading expands into much more nonfiction and other texts. Reading to your child is still incredibly valuable. Your role: Continue to help your child build independence. Be supportive, but put your child in charge of completing homework. Fourth Grade In fourth grade, many teachers transition into communicating primarily with students about homework and assignments. Teachers elevate the focus on time management and organizational skills. Your child must keep track of homework each day. Nightly math homework becomes more complex (covering geometric figures, introduction to decimals, fractions and percentages, and more) and should take 20-30 minutes, and other homework and projects will take additional time. Your child should read for at least 20 minutes each night. Your role: Continue to build independence and encourage your childs responsibility in keeping track of homework assigned and upcoming projects. Be available for support. Fifth Grade Fifth grade homework is meant to prepare students for middle school. Students are expected to do math (decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios and much more), maintain a planner/organizational system, study for quizzes and read every night. Projects give fifth-grade students an opportunity to research, plan and complete bigger tasks that take several nights or weeks. Your role: Uphold a consistent homework routine, check your childs planner to ensure its proper and effective use, and be available for homework questions. Homework is a great way for you to stay apprised of what your child is learning in school, and it is also a big part of your childs life as a student. If you are unsure about the extent of your role at homework time, talk to your childs teacher. When homework is a family priority, your child benefits and becomes a more responsible, independent and successful student. About Huntington Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. Volunteer With Heart Cate Rogers - Heart Math Tutoring
Volunteer With Heart Cate Rogers - Heart Math Tutoring Volunteer With Heart: Cate Rogers Volunteer With Heart: Cate Rogers April 1, 2016 Cate Rogers has always considered math critically important. She spent more than 40 years in education starting as a secretary, then as a special education teacher, an elementary and middle school principal, a superintendent and then as a professor and graduate school dean. She worked tirelessly to help teachers overcome their own fears and biases in the teaching of math (and science, too) so they would be able to instill in their students a love of math. Cate tutors a third grader and a fourth grader each week at Piney Grove Elementary School through Heart Math Tutoring. Why did you become a volunteer? After retiring, I wanted to be involved with children and their learning. My husband found this program and wanted to work with young children as well so we are doing this together. This is his first time tutoring and we are learning and growing together. Things change in education and it is important to keep up with the times. This program is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in helping a child improve his or her math skills. What its something you have in common with one of your students? The color purple! We both love it! What would you tell someone who is thinking about becoming a volunteer? Heart is a wonderful opportunity for someone who would like to make a difference in a childs life. The program is well organized with extensive lesson plans. Seeing the gains made by the students is very rewarding. Its only a few hours a week and its well worth your time and commitment. Give it a try! Cateâs students look forward to working with her each week. We can always count on her fourth grade student arriving early on Thursdays, eager to know if Cate is here for her tutoring session. Heart is fortunate and grateful that Cate and John Rogers have chosen to spend their time each week with the program at Piney Grove Elementary! The Rogers are new to North Carolina as of summer 2015, and we wish you a very warm welcome to Charlotte! #VolunteerwithHeart #ItAllAddsUp
